Birthdays, hens

Children’s parties, hen parties, corporate days and the barbecue afterwards. Every one of them is priced on numbers, ages and food, so there is no price list here. Tell us what you have in mind and we will send one back.

Four kinds of day

What a group
actually does here

All four run on the same yard, with the same horses and the same instructors. What changes is who rides, for how long, and what is waiting when they get off.

How this works

Tell us what you have in mind.

There is no price list for a group here, because there is no such thing as an average group. Six four-year-olds and fourteen adults are two different days on the same yard. Send one message with the numbers, the ages and the date you are thinking of, and we will send back a price and the shape of the afternoon.

We reply within one working day. Nothing is held in the diary until you say yes, and nothing is paid until it is.

A birthday party, hour by hour

Two hours, and how they go

This is the usual shape. With six four-year-olds it runs slower; with twelve ten-year-olds it runs in three groups. We send you the plan for your own afternoon once we know the numbers.

Hen parties

Hen parties, honestly.

A hen party often arrives expecting a gallop along a beach. We would rather say now what the hour really is, because the groups who book it knowing that are the ones who love it.

The high point of the trail: Howth on one side, the Wicklow hills on the other, and the whole of the bay in between.
What it is

An hour out the back gate and up through 3,000 acres of forest, to the point where the bay opens up. Private to your group, led the whole way, on whichever horses suit the riders you bring.

What it is not

Every walkout is private, at walking pace, on a lead rein — always. No trotting, no cantering, whatever your experience.

Why people book it anyway

Because at walking pace everybody can look up. The nervous one in the group has a good morning, the one who rode as a teenager gets her hour back, and everyone goes home with photographs nobody else will have.

A day out that nobody has to be good at

Half a day or a full one, Wed – Sun, 9 am – 6 pm. We quote on numbers and on how long you want the group here.

A rider working a palomino in the outdoor sand arenaNeeds pro shoot

The reason a yard works for a team is that it flattens everybody. Nobody is senior to a horse. We split the group between the covered arena and the forest trail, swap them at the halfway point, and you all end up back in the yard at the same time with something to talk about that is not work.

It suits a team where nobody has ridden, because none of it needs skill — the walkout is led at a walk and the arena session starts at the mounting block. If someone would rather not sit on a horse at all, there is a yard, a tack shop and thirty palominos to be shown around instead.

Competitions and outings

These are not booked from the website. They are for riders who ride here week in, week out — start with a lesson and ask your instructor what is coming up.

The beach trek

When the summer allows it, the horses go to the sand. It is the outing everyone asks about first.

The one competition you can come to without riding in it is the Friday afternoon jumping show at the end of every Pony Camp week. Families stand along the fence, rosettes are handed out, and nobody minds a crowd. Pony Camp

What a group this size needs to know

Numbers

Tell us the head count first. It decides how many instructors are on and how many ponies come in — up to 12 at a party, 8 at a time out on the trail.

Ages

From age 4 for a party, 5 for a lesson, 3 for Pony Play. Mixed ages are normal — we split the group and rotate it.

Weather

The arena is covered, so a party goes ahead in the rain. Walkouts go out in ordinary Irish weather. Long trousers and a rain jacket.

Food

There is somewhere dry to eat. A barbecue is by arrangement, and so is arriving with your own cake, sandwiches and bunting.

Parking

Free parking at the yard and room for a horsebox. Please arrive 15 minutes early so hats and boots can be fitted.

Maximum rider weight 95 kg (15 stone), for the horses’ welfare. Change or cancel free up to 48 hours before your slot. Inside 48 hours we do our best to offer a credit.
Questions

The four we are asked most

What does a party cost?
From €45 a child, and the real number depends on how many are coming, what age they are and whether you want food. Send us the numbers and we will come back with a price for your own afternoon rather than a range. We reply within one working day.
Does anyone in the group need to have ridden before?
No. Most groups who come here have never sat on a horse. Riding hats and boots are provided free and fitted on arrival, walkouts are led the whole way, and party rides are on a lead rein. Maximum rider weight 95 kg (15 stone), for the horses’ welfare.
Can a hen party canter, or gallop up the mountain?
No. Every walkout is private, at walking pace, on a lead rein — always. No trotting, no cantering, whatever your experience. It is a safety rule that does not bend for a group, and it is the reason someone who has never ridden can come out beside someone who has ridden for years.
What happens if it rains on the day?
The arena is covered and all-weather, so a party or a team day goes ahead. Walkouts go out in ordinary Irish weather; we only call one off for wind or ice. Long trousers and a rain jacket are all you bring.
