Placeholder — not this yardOut the back gate,
into 3,000 acres.
Every walkout is private, at walking pace, on a lead rein — always. No trotting, no cantering, whatever your experience. That is not a limitation. It is the reason you spend the hour looking at Dublin Bay instead of at your own hands.

Walk only, on a lead rein,
always.
No trotting and no cantering, on any walkout, at any level, on any day. It is the same hour for somebody who has never touched a horse and for somebody who rode all through their twenties — and it is the reason a family with a five-year-old can go out into open country at all.
You look at the bay, not the reins
At a walk, with somebody else steering, your hands are free and your eyes are up. The view is the reason you came. Nobody who has trotted a strange horse along a forestry track has ever seen much of it.
Nobody has to have ridden
There is nothing to learn first and no test at the gate. The lead rein does the work, which is what lets a nervous adult and a five-year-old ride out together on the same hour.
It is your group and nobody else’s
Every walkout is private. You are never put out with strangers, and the pace of the ride is set by whoever in your party is least sure of it.
An hour, from the yard
to the top and back
One track out and the same track home, all of it on the forest trails that start at the back gate of the yard.
- 00:00
- The yardA hat and boots fitted to you, then you meet your horse. A mounting block, somebody at the head, and no hurry about any of it.
- 00:10
- The back gateOut of the yard and straight onto the hill. The road noise is gone inside a minute and it does not come back.
- 00:20
- The forestry trackUnder the pines on soft ground. Sheltered, quiet, and the stretch of the route that stays good in bad weather.
- 00:40
- The viewThe trees open out. Howth to the north, the Sugarloaf and the Wicklow hills to the south, Dublin Bay in between. This is where we stop. Take the photographs — somebody else is holding the reins.
- 00:50
- Back downThe same track the other way, which looks nothing like it did on the way up. The two-hour route carries on to the upper tracks before it turns.
- 01:00
- The yard againOff at the mounting block. Most people stand at the fence for a while before they drive home.

Why the price moves
Every walkout is private, so a single rider is paying for a guide on their own. Add somebody and that cost is shared — which is the whole of the discount, and the reason it stops at €10.

Four kinds of afternoon
A walkout is not a riding lesson with a better view. It is a way of getting into the mountains that happens to involve a horse.
Visiting Dublin
Forty minutes from the city centre and the only hour of the trip that is not indoors. Luas to Sandyford, then a short taxi to the gate.
You have never ridden
No experience needed and none expected. Most people on a walkout have never sat on a horse before that morning.
A family, small children included
From age five, each child on their own horse and each horse led. Parents ride too, or walk beside them.
A wet afternoon
Most of the route is under trees. Rain in a forest is a different thing entirely to rain in a car park.
What to wear on the hill
Long trousers and a rain jacket. Riding hats and boots are provided free.
Bring
- Long trousers. Jeans or leggings are fine; shorts are not.
- A rain jacket, whatever the forecast said in town. It is a mountain.
- Gloves between October and March. Your hands are on a rein for an hour.
- Long hair tied back, and no loose scarves.
Provided, free
- A riding hat, fitted to your head at the yard.
- Riding boots in your size, adult and child.
- Somebody leading your horse for the whole hour, start to finish.
- Free parking at the gate, and horsebox access if you are bringing your own.
What you actually see
Photographs from the route itself, in whatever weather was going at the time. The view deserves better cameras than it has had so far.
